Pumpkin (Kaddu in Hindi) is a golden fruit, which can be cooked in any form, it all depends on how one likes this, one may like this a savory or sweet. It is used in many recipes as hidden vegetable. But Pumpkin cooked by itself is the delicious dish, which can be made by mixing potatoes or green peas.


I have made this dish in a new way and have given name Pumpkin Peas Tornado, due to special way of mixing spices, this dish is prepared in 15 minutes, on a slow flame and taste tangy.  So let’s try out this recipe.

  • ¼ kg Pumpkin (Kaddu)
  • 100 gms Green Peas
  • 1 Inch Ginger  (finely chopped)
  • 1 to 2 Green chilies (finely chopped)
  • 1 tsp Cumin seeds
  • 2 to 3 Garlic pods
  • 2 to 3 Spiced red chilies
  • 1 medium size onions (finely chopped)
  • 1 tsp Kashmiri  chili powder
  • 1 tsp Sambhar powder
  • Pinch of Asafoetida
  • Few curry leaves
  • Salt to taste
  • Olive Oil for cooking


There is 2 way for cooking this dish. Firstly, with onions & garlic.  Secondly, without onions and garlic. The second method of preparation is normally cooked during Navratri or any other fast kept. It is a very simple dish and is cooked in 10-15 minutes.

Wash and peel the skin of the pumpkin and cut them into small pieces. Heat oil in a pan. Add

Heat Olive oil in a pan. Add  Asafoetida, (Hing), cumin seeds, ginger pieces, green chilies and curry leaves. Mix well, till the aroma fills the air and all the ingredients blend well.

Add the finely chopped onions, green peas and sauté well.

Add the pumpkin pieces, mix well, till all the ingredients get coated to each other. Now add the spices, mix well

Now add the spices, add some water and mix well for cooking. Close the lid and allow it to cook for 5 minutes, till pumpkin and green peas are soft and tender.

In a pestle or mixer put the garlic and spiced red chilies and grind or crush to a paste. Now open the lid make a hollow in between and add this mixture. Mix well, close the lid for 2 minutes. This is the reason I have given the name “Pumpkin Peas Tornado “ (By this, the mixture first gets heated and then mixed with pumpkin, it’s not raw, that will give you a different taste.)

After 2 minutes open and you will feel the aroma of the garlic and spiced red chilies.

Turn off the gas. Garnish it with coriander and serve it hot with pooris, rice, dal, papad, pickles etc.

Note: During fast avoid onions and garlic.  Instead of garlic,  you can grind ginger , curry leaves with red chillies.
